Just because a shed is small does not mean it should be wimpy. This rugged post and beam backyard storage shed construction is designed to be built with rough sawn lumber, in true-dimensional size. This no-frills utility shed can be built with the basics. We recommend knotty pine board siding, a hemlock lumber frame, rough cut hemlock decking, metal roofing and a set of pine double doors with a treated ramp. This set of plans is perfect for beginners to tackle. One of our office employees, who had minimal building experience, built a similar shed with her family over a weekend. She said it was a fun and gratifying home improvement project for all involved. The floor system, while built with 2×4 lumber is installed on skids, making this construction a portable shed that can be lifted with forks. Unlike big box store sheds this one has no bounce in the floor.
These little storage buildings are ideal for hiding away bicycles, garden tools, grills, lawnmowers, and other landscaping equipment. Some customers have let us know that they have also creatively used the Nantucket as a backyard bar, pool house, a large backyard chicken coop, and as a shared detached bathroom, with a Nature’s Head composting toilet, for a tiny home community. I am sure you can think of other uses for this versatile little shed. If you are searching for log style sheds this building can be built with pine log siding to give it the appearance of a log cabin, you can see photos of this customization on our Nantucket page.
These do-it-yourself building plans are straight-forward and keep beginner builders in mind. If you have ever been curious about learning the basics in post and beam carpentry this is a great first project to tackle before attempting more challenging builds. An exploded view diagram, color-coded cut list and illustrations will guide you through each step of the building process. Traceable rafter patterns, a shopping list and written instructions are all very helpful as well. If you are short on time or feel nervous around power tools we recommend going for a pre-cut shed kit which comes with all of the lumber ready to be nailed together. If you are very short on time, and live in the Northeast United States we have premade mini sheds for sale too!
